'Mush! Keep them doggies rolling!'
05/12/2007

The Quantock Hills in Somerset were buzzing with the eager howls from hundreds of Siberian huskies and sleddogs on 24th-25th November.
Spectators gathered around the forest trails to enjoy the thrill of watching and photographing the dogs in action over a two day night & day trail.
Enthusiastic Mushers and more than 70 teams ventured into The Great Woods at Over Stowey, all members of The Siberian Husky Club Of Great Britain, travelling from far and wide to compete in the Quantock Quest Sled Dog Rally. This was the second event of its kind staged at this venue.
The dogs work in harness and pull specially built rigs which carry their musher, controlled by verbal commands. The main course is between 3 and 4 miles long and speeds of 25mph can be reached by the larger teams.
Sleddogs have the strength and speed to hurtle at full speed along the forest trails, their enthusiasm is evident as they howl and jump with excitement at the anticipation of getting a run.
Classes vary, from 6 dog teams, 4 dog teams, 3 dog teams, and 2 dog teams. People with 1 dog can compete in Cani-cross, Scooter or Bike-Joring classes. There are also classes for freight breeds.
Specially adapted and shortened trails are provided for junior competitors, the youngest musher to compete at the event is just 8 years old.
The competitors are set off from the start lines at 2 minute intervals and timed as they travel around a set course.
There are no cash prizes, and people compete for the love of the sport and to enjoy the social occasion that these
events are.
Trophies are awarded to 1st, 2nd, and 3rd places in all classes, and medallions awarded to all who entered.
Sponsors, provide a valuable incentive, and fantastic boost to the day, and we are very Grateful to Wagg for their generous donations, allowing every competitor to go home with a well earned treat for their hard working dogs.
